What is a 33kV Current Transformer?
A 33kV Current Transformer is an instrument transformer that steps down the high current in a 33kV circuit to a standardised, safe secondary value, typically 1A or 5A. It isolates meters and protection relays from the high-voltage line while reproducing the primary current accurately and in proportion.
In 33kV class equipment, the highest voltage for equipment is generally 36kV. Insulation levels, creepage distance and construction are selected to suit this class and the site environment. A wrongly specified CT can lead to inaccurate billing, relay mal-operation or failure to trip during a fault, which is why ratio, accuracy class, burden and knee-point behaviour must be defined before ordering.
Metering
Metering CTs feed energy meters and trivector meters for revenue billing and energy accounting, with high accuracy in the normal operating range.
Monitoring
CTs supply ammeters, power analysers, SCADA transducers and load-monitoring systems to track loading, power factor and demand.
Protection
Protection CTs feed overcurrent, earth fault, differential and distance relays, staying accurate at many times rated current during faults.
In most 33kV installations, metering and protection are handled by separate cores in the same CT, or by separate CTs. For complete assemblies, see our CT PT metering units.
33kV current transformer types we supply
Single Phase Single Bushing CT
Single-bushing primary arrangement in a single-phase unit, for installations where compact construction and a straightforward primary connection are preferred.
- Primary rating and any multi-ratio requirement
- Number of cores and their accuracy classes
- Rated burden for each core
- Terminal arrangement and mounting orientation
- Outdoor or indoor installation
Single Phase Double Bushing CT
Both primary terminals brought out through separate bushings, commonly specified where the layout calls for both primary connections to be insulated externally.
- Primary terminal arrangement and connection
- Insulation and creepage for the site
- Core configuration and accuracy classes
- Mounting details and overall dimensions
- Compatibility with existing layout
33kV Metering CT
Built for accuracy at normal load currents, for revenue metering, energy audit and tariff billing. See our 33kV metering CT PT range.
- Used with energy meters, trivector meters and power analysers
- High-accuracy classes for billing points
- Burden matched to meter and lead resistance
- Often defined by utility or DISCOM specifications
33kV Protection CT
Designed to remain reliable under fault conditions, when primary current can be many times the rated value.
- For overcurrent, earth fault, differential and busbar relays
- Protection class and accuracy limit factor per fault level
- Burden checked against relay and cable loop
- Special classes for differential or high-impedance schemes

Frequently asked questions
What is a 33kV CT?
A current transformer for 33kV systems that reduces high line current to a standard secondary value (commonly 1A or 5A) so meters and relays operate safely and accurately.
Who supplies 33kV CTs in India?
Amrest supplies single and double bushing 33kV CTs for substations, utilities, industries and EPC projects. Share your requirement for a quotation.
Single bushing vs double bushing CT?
The difference is the primary construction. A double bushing CT brings both primary terminals out through separate bushings. The right choice depends on your layout and datasheet.
What is a metering CT?
A CT that feeds energy meters and instruments, designed for high accuracy in the normal load range for billing, energy audit and monitoring.
What is a protection CT?
A CT that feeds protection relays, designed to stay reliable at high fault currents so relays detect faults and trip correctly.
Can CT ratios be customised?
Yes. Primary and secondary current, multi-ratio taps, cores and burdens can be customised as per project requirement.
Does Amrest supply CTs for EPC projects?
Yes, including datasheet-based quotations and bulk supply. Send your BOQ or specification for review.
Can Amrest support export requirements?
Yes. Share the destination country, required standards and documentation with your enquiry.
